Is the pen mightier than the sword?

This is the first book I have read from Ms Frayn and I enjoyed it.
The story started quite slowly, which I don't necessarily like, but it did gain momentum before too long and get into the blood and guts of it (pun intended).
Part love story, part thriller, it jumps back and forth in time to explain our heroine's history as we go.
Does vigilante justice work? Is it a good thing? In Billie's life it seems to and the sword definitely seems mightier than the pen!
